The engine block, transmission case, and hydraulic system are the same as official models, but sensors, switches, and the wiring harness differ. A knocking sound from the front axle on B-series tractors usually means worn kingpin bushings or a failing front axle pivot pin. The pivot pin wears an oval hole in the mounting bracket over time, especially on tractors used with a front loader. If ignored, the bracket can crack. Jack up the front axle and check for vertical and horizontal play at the pivot point. We can source the pivot pin kit and bushings.

M-series tractors have a tight radiator screen that packs with debris during brush hogging and rotary tilling. The screen is difficult to access for cleaning without removing the grille. If the temperature gauge climbs during PTO work but is normal on the road, a blocked radiator screen is the likely cause. Blow compressed air backwards through the radiator fins. Persistent overheating may need a coolant flush.

The model and serial number plate is riveted to the left side of the transmission housing, just above the foot step. The model code (e.g., L3901, B2620, M9540) tells you the series. Hydrostatic transmission jerkiness at low RPM and cold oil is common across Kubota L, B and BX series. It is not a mechanical fault — the HST needs proper warmup and the correct Super UDT2 fluid. Run at 1,500+ RPM for 5 minutes before precision work. If the jerking persists when warm, the charge pump pressure may be low or the HST linkage may need adjustment. Kubota compact tractors have a fine mesh radiator screen that traps chaff during mowing. Once packed, airflow drops and coolant temperature spikes. Check and clean the screen every 4-6 hours of heavy PTO work. Some owners retrofit a coarser expanded metal screen for better flow. If the warning light comes on, stop immediately and clean the screen — head gasket damage from overheating is expensive.

Some drift over 24 hours is normal, but if the implement sinks in 15-30 minutes the lift cylinder piston seal is worn. Check the hydraulic fluid level and condition first — foamy or dark fluid accelerates seal wear. The PTO position switch and the seat safety switch are the most common failure points. The PTO switch fails when the lever vibrates slightly out of the detent position. Before replacing switches, cycle the PTO lever and rock the seat while holding the key to start — if it cranks, you have isolated the faulty switch. The Denso starter on Kubota compact tractors develops solenoid contact wear around 400-600 hours. The symptom is intermittent — sometimes it cranks, sometimes you get a single click. When the solenoid fails internally, it can draw high current and produce smoke. The starter can be rebuilt with new solenoid contacts or replaced as a complete unit. L3901 and other Kubota models above 25HP have a DPF system that requires periodic regeneration. If the duty cycle is mostly low-RPM work (loading, snow blowing), the DPF never reaches regen temperature and eventually clogs. The tractor enters limp mode with the DPF warning light on. A dealer can force a stationary regen, but modifying the duty cycle or using the tractor at higher RPM prevents recurrence.
