Older YM models stored for long periods develop fuel system problems: clogged filters, air ingress at the filter head O-ring, and injection pump internal sticking from old fuel residue. Start by replacing all fuel filters and the small O-ring under the filter head bolt. If the engine starts but misses, bleed the injection lines at the injectors. Persistent issues may need the injection pump bench-tested.

Powershift YM models have a range selector with F1/F2/R positions and no clutch pedal needed for forward-reverse direction changes. Manual YM models have a standard H-pattern or shuttle shift. The Powershift clutch packs and control valve are different from the manual transmission wet clutch. The Powershift is more expensive to repair. YM wet disc brakes run in oil and wear gradually. If the brakes squeal when applied, contamination or glazing is the cause. If they do not hold, the discs may be at minimum thickness. Adjustment is external on most YM models — check the adjuster on the rear axle housing before assuming replacement. If the oil looks like grey paste, the friction material has worn off the discs.

The steering cylinder rod seal and the orbital valve inlet O-ring are the most common leak points on YM power steering. The steering cylinder rod seal wears from dirt ingress and begins dripping from the wiper seal. The orbital valve O-ring hardens and leaks at the hose fitting. YM tractors with infrequent coolant changes develop rust scale inside the radiator tubes, blocking flow and causing overheating. If the radiator feels cool at the bottom while the top hose is hot, the core is clogged. A radiator shop can rod-clean the core if the tubes are not too corroded. We can also supply a replacement radiator. Always use correct coolant with SCA additives in Yanmar engines.

YM grey imports have Japanese-spec wiring that differs from Malaysian-market schematics. Connections corrode from storage in humid conditions. Start by cleaning the main earth strap from battery to chassis, and the engine ground strap. The fuse box terminals often corrode and cause intermittent faults — disassemble and clean with contact cleaner. Replace any bullet connectors that show green corrosion.

Old YM fuel tanks rust internally from water condensation over years of storage. The rust flakes clog the fuel tap screen and injection pump inlet. The permanent fix is to remove and clean the tank internally, or replace it. Install a secondary inline fuel filter between the tank and the lift pump for ongoing protection. Use a fuel stabiliser if the tractor sits for months.

YM diesels rely on glow plugs for cold starting. Test the glow plug bus bar with a multimeter — 12V should reach all plugs. If the bus bar is hot but the engine still cranks slowly, check the battery CCA rating and the starter motor condition. If it cranks normally but won't fire, compression may be low from worn piston rings or valve seat recession. A compression test kit tells you which cylinder is weak.
